Patton Boggs partner heads to Steptoe
Steptoe & Johnson hired Patton Boggs lobbyist Darryl Nirenberg as a partner in its government affairs and public policy shop in Washington, the firm announced Wednesday.
Nirenberg is the latest departure from K Street’s top earner, which has seen revenues falter in recent years. He had been with the firm since leaving Capitol Hill in 1995, and said he is “thrilled” to join Steptoe.
{mosads}“I have teamed with Steptoe on successful legislative and policy projects throughout my years in private practice. I have always been impressed with the firm’s lawyers and policy advisors and how thorough, substantive, well-prepared, and effective they are in producing results for their clients,” Nirenberg said in a statement.
Steptoe has a relatively modest lobbying department that took in $5.2 million in lobbying revenues last year, compared with Patton Boggs’ more than $40.2 million.
Phil West, the chair of Steptoe & Johnson, said the new hire would help boost the lobby shop.
“[He] brings years of Hill experience and strong connections to many Republican senators and members of Congress,” West said in a statement. “His years of experience in helping clients successfully navigate the legislative process, and his proficiency in Senate legislative and parliamentary procedures will be assets to our clients and will enhance the suite of government relations and public policy services the firm offers.”
Steptoe lobbies for the clothing brand Coach, Kia Motors, the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America, the National Association of Convenience Stores and recently signed the Internet Association and HTC America.
While at Patton, Nirenberg’s largest clients included the M&Ms manufacturer, Mars Inc., the Las Vegas Sands and the USINDIA Business Council.
He has worked on issues such as the medical device tax under ObamaCare, trade with China and Internet gambling.
