New video surfaces of US soldier in captivity

A new video from December 2013 has surfaced that shows missing U.S. soldier Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was taken captive in Afghanistan in 2009.

CNN reports that the U.S. military has obtained the proof-of-life video of Bergdahl, who is believed to be held by the Haqqani Network in Pakistan.

{mosads}The video makes a reference to Dec. 14, 2013, and it shows that Bergdahl is in diminished health, according to officials who described the video to CNN.

The video is the first of Bergdahl, the only U.S. service member in captivity, in nearly three years.

The United States had discussed a prisoner exchange with the Taliban involving Bergdahl and five Guantanamo Bay detainees, but those negotiations did not lead to any agreement.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) issued a statement on the video calling on the Pentagon to devote more resources to rescuing Bergdahl.

“It is unacceptable that an American service member has languished in captivity for so long,” Ayotte said. “I urge the Department of Defense to devote more resources and a greater sense of urgency to finding Bowe and reuniting him with his loved ones.”
