LAX shooting prompts airport security review

U.S. Attorney Gen. Eric Holder said Monday the investigation into last week’s deadly shooting at Los Angeles International Airport would include a review of security regulations at airports around the country.

{mosads}The FBI, a branch of Holder’s Justice Department, is leading the investigation into Friday’s attack, which left a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer dead and three others wounded.

“The investigation is obviously underway, and part of that investigation will be a review of the security measures that were in place — not only at LAX but I think a review of the security arrangements that exist at other airports as well,” Holder said.

Holder, during remarks at Justice Department headquarters noted that the TSA’s primary mission is to screen passengers and ensure safe boarding on planes.

“The responsibility for protecting airport security is not a TSA function, but something that I think we need to certainly examine, given what happened in Los Angeles,” he said.

The alleged shooter, 23-year-old Paul Ciancia, remains hospitalized with wounds to the leg and head that he sustained in a gunfight with authorities at LAX. Charged with murder, Ciancia has been unable to communicate with investigators, though he reportedly told officers at the scene that he had acted alone.

Numerous media outlets have reported that Ciancia was motivated by a hatred of government, and the TSA in particular.

“No feelings about the government could possibly justify those kinds of actions,” Holder said.
