Player of the Week: Secretary Kathleen Sebelius

Kathleen Sebelius faces a tough week.

The Health and Human Services secretary on Wednesday will testify about the botched launch of HealthCare.gov before the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

{mosads}A growing number of Republicans are calling for Sebelius’s resignation. President Obama is standing by his longtime Cabinet member, but Democrats in Congress are nervous.

The good news for Sebelius is that not one prominent Democrat has called for her head. If that happens, she will be in a ton of trouble.

Instead, some centrist Democrats have proposed changes to ObamaCare, such as extending the enrollment period and delaying the individual mandate.

In a sign of how bad the situation has become for Sebelius, both “Saturday Night Live” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” have mocked HealthCare.gov.

On Monday, Reps. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.) and Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) sent a letter to Sebelius saying that she has made “a number of curious statements” in her career.

Specifically, the trio of GOP legislators is balking at her most recent comment complaining about the “political atmosphere where the majority party, at least in the House, was determined to stop [ObamaCare] anyway they possibly could.”

The Republicans point out that Sebelius had more than three years and $500 million to “prepare, test and perfect” the beleaguered Affordable Care Act website.

Sebelius has had a rocky relationship with the GOP. Her confirmation was controversial, but she was confirmed by the Senate on a 65-31 count.

Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), who is facing a primary election challenge this cycle, introduced Sebelius, a former governor of Kansas, at her 2009 confirmation hearings. He noted that they had a special relationship, rattling off their family connections. Now, Roberts is calling for her resignation in the wake of ObamaCare woes.
