Trayvon Martin’s mother will testify before Senate committee

Zach Krahmer

Trayvon Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, will testify before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee Tuesday about the “stand your ground” law in Florida.

The hearing was originally scheduled for last month, but had to be postponed until Oct. 29.

{mosads}In July, George Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was unarmed.

The Florida law extends self-protection so that a person can use deadly force if there is a perceived threat without the requirement to retreat. Initially police cited the “stand your ground” law as the reason why they could not arrest Zimmerman on the day of the shooting, Feb. 26, 2012.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) will lead the hearing titled, “’Stand Your Ground’ Laws: Civil Rights and Public Safety Implications of the Expanded Use of Deadly Force.”
