Ways and Means to check back in on IRS

Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said last week that the House would continue to turn up the heat on its IRS investigation, after the GOP has made the targeting controversy a big part of their political messaging.

{mosads}But while Republicans insist that many questions still need answers, top House Democrats have repeatedly stressed that there’s no evidence of political motivation or White House involvement in the targeting. Democrats have also pointed out that internal IRS watch lists also scrutinized liberal groups.

Lois Lerner, the former head of the exempt-organizations division and the IRS official who disclosed the targeting, invoked her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination when appearing before House Oversight in May.

Oversight has ruled that Lerner, currently on administrative leave, waived her Fifth Amendment rights and could be hauled back before the panel.

Republicans on Ways and Means already rebuked Werfel in June for what they considered a shoddy initial review of the targeting controversy.
