Hot flashes in a Cold War
Cold War history is only now coming into its own, as the players gain some distance from the events they were a part of and look past some of the still-lukewarm politics.
As one former ambassador at work on his memoirs recently told me, “I had to wait for a few people to die before I could be completely candid.” Death or not, Thomas Reed has apparently waited long enough, and history buffs are the better for it. You may not have heard of Reed. I know I hadn’t when I picked up this 350-page volume, but, as I soon discovered, there were few more complete Cold Warriors than he.
