Amash: Syria authorization vote would fail

“Why don’t Pres Obama & leaders in Washington want
Congress to vote on attacking #Syria? Because the vote would fail,” Amash tweeted.

{mosads}The letter, which is being led by Rep. Scott Rigell (R-Va.),
argues that it would be unconstitutional for President Obama to launch military
action in Syria without prior congressional approval.

“Engaging our military in Syria when no direct threat to the
United States exists and without prior congressional authorization would
violate the separation of powers that is clearly delineated in the
Constitution,” the lawmakers wrote.

At 3 p.m. Wednesday, 107 lawmakers had signed onto the
letter, including 16 Democrats.

An aide to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Monday
that the White House must
consult with Congress before taking military action but did not raise the
possibility of Congress returning for a vote to authorization military
intervention in Syria.

In July, the House passed
by voice vote an amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill that restricting
funds for military action in Syria if the action was inconsistent with the War
Powers Act.
