Navy admiral tapped for Strategic Command post
If confirmed by the Senate, Haney would be tasked with
overseeing the U.S. nuclear forces at a time when President Obama is pushing to
reduce the number of U.S. strategic nuclear weapons. Obama said in a speech in
Berlin last week that he wants to shrink the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
{mosads}Haney would also become a key player in the debate over a third missile defense site on the East Coast, something Republicans
have advocated for. Democrats have cited Kehler’s comments in their arguments against the
site, as he’s said it is not currently necessary.
Vice. Adm. Harry Harris was nominated Monday to get his
fourth star and succeed Haney as commander of the Pacific Fleet. Harris is
currently assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
Obama also nominated Rear Adm. James Caldwell to become the
Navy’s inspector general.
