Gomez leans on Scott Brown for help at close of Massachusetts Senate race

Republican Gabriel Gomez is turning to former Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) for help in the closing days of the Massachusetts Senate campaign, hoping the former lawmaker will propel him to an upset over Democratic front-runner Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) in Tuesday’s election. 

{mosads}Brown will appear at a campaign rally with Gabriel Gomez on Monday night, a Gomez campaign aide tells The Hill.

Brown’s appearance could offer Gomez a much-needed boost of enthusiasm as the campaign closes. 

The Republican candidate is hoping to duplicate Brown’s 2010 upset over Democrat Martha Coakley in a similar special election, but as yet, has not shown the sustained momentum he’d need to overcome Democrats’ substantial voter registration advantage in the state.

The Gomez-Brown rally is part of a final push for the Republican, who has trailed his opponent Markey, a longtime congressman, in every independent poll of the race.

The most recent survey, conducted by a Republican pollster for an outside group backing Gomez, had the GOP candidate down by three percentage points. Gomez’s own internal polling, released earlier this week, showed him down by seven percentage points.

Markey, for his part, has rolled out nearly every Democratic heavy hitter the party has to ensure a win, including President Obama and former President Clinton, as well as a visit on Saturday night planned by Vice President Biden.

The winner of Tuesday’s election will fill the Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State John Kerry.
