House kills Dem proposal to end immigration from Brazil

The language says that “none of the funds made available by this Act may be used to approve a classification petition filed for or by a citizen or national of Brazil in order to render such individual eligible to receive an immigrant visa.”

{mosads}But on Wednesday evening, Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) raised a point of order agains the language, and argued that it would change existing law, which is not a proper use of an appropriations bill.

The presiding officer, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), quickly read a ruling from the chair, which agreed with Goodlatte’s argument. As a result, that section is now removed from the bill.

The House was considering amendments to the DHS spending bill, H.R. 2217, all day Wednesday, and was expected to pass it Thursday.
