Virginia, California hit hardest by Pentagon furloughs
The Pentagon is furloughing roughly 680,000 of its 800,000
civilian employees beginning July 8.
{mosads}The Pentagon says it will save $1.8 billion by furloughing
most civilians up to 11 days. The employees will be furloughed one day per week
through September, the end of the fiscal year.
This week, the Pentagon began sending out notices to
employees notifying them of the furloughs, as a 30-day notice period is
required.
After Virginia and California, Texas was third on the list
of states affected by the furloughs, with 45,000 employees receiving them. Maryland
and Georgia rounded out the top five.
The Pentagon had initially threatened to furlough civilians
for 22 days in order to grapple with the automatic budget cuts under
sequestration. But that number was reduced to 14 and then 11 as the Pentagon
received budget help through a full-year Defense appropriations bill and a
slightly lower topline number to cut.
