Clint Eastwood: Obama ‘seems very charming’
{mosads}Eastwood explained that his speech, which was mostly ad-libbed, was partially a result of the fact that he did not bring his glasses with him.
“I’m not good at that,” Eastwood said of his decision not to use a teleprompter. “I didn’t have my glasses with me, so I would’ve probably not been able to read it anyway.”
Eastwood’s speech went viral and inspired Internet memes. In the aftermath of the convention, critics of Eastwood’s speech said it overshadowed Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s own address. Polls found that most viewers chose Eastwood’s speech as the highlight of the convention. Eastwood dominated online conversation about the convention on an evening when Romney also accepted the GOP nomination.
“I didn’t try to upstage anybody,” Eastwood said, when asked if he stole the spotlight. Mitt and Ann Romney have repeatedly said they enjoyed the speech and had no problem with the way Eastwood used the time.
“Everybody seemed to have a good time with it and that’s all that matters,” he said. “You’re supposed to love it or hate it. I’m just expressing my feelings … There’s something about the aging process that makes you give a crap less, it seems like.”
