Liberal group targets Ann Romney in new ads

{mosads}The Progressive Change Campaign Committee is launching online ads, first set to run in Ohio, that highlights Ann Romney’s quote and suggests it shows that she and husband Mitt Romney, the GOP presidential nominee, are out of touch with middle-class voters.
 
“Ann Romney just admitted that she Mitt Romney have ‘not had a financial struggle in their lives,’ ” the ad states. “This is huge. We’re launching this new online ad in Ohio and other swing states to show voters proof that Mitt Romney is out of touch.”
 
The advertisement then asks for donations.
 
While the criticism of Ann Romney is soft, it is still notable, as it is traditionally taboo to attack a candidate’s wife.
 
The quote from Ann Romney comes from an appearance she made Sunday.
 
“Mitt and I do recognize that we have not had a financial struggle in our lives,” she said on NBC’s “Meet The Press” on Sunday. “But I want people to believe in their hearts that we know what it is like to struggle. And our struggles have not been financial, but they’ve been with health and with difficulties in different things in life.”
 
The statement is in contrast to the story Ann Romney told during her well-received address to the Republican National Convention in late August.
 
“We got married and moved into a basement apartment. We walked to class together, shared the housekeeping, and ate a lot of pasta and tuna fish,” she said. “Our desk was a door propped up on sawhorses. Our dining room table was a fold-down ironing board in the kitchen. Those were very special days.”
 
Democrats have worked throughout the cycle to portray Romney as an out-of-touch corporate raider who doesn’t understand the struggles of ordinary Americans.
 
However, the PCCC’s ad campaign is not without considerable risk.
 
While her Sunday statement might not match the story she told at the convention, Ann Romney was making the point that she and her husband understand what it means to struggle because of the health issues she’s dealt with.

Romney has said that finding out his wife had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis was “the most difficult time in our life.”
