Gun safety group says Jack In The Box should enforce firearm ban

Gun safety activists are calling on the Jack In The Box fast-food chain to ban firearms in their restaurants, after a group of gun demonstrators frightened employees and customers last week at a franchise in Fort Worth, Texas.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America called on the chain to enforce its policy against customers bringing guns into the store.

{mosads}”Jack in the Box reportedly has a policy prohibiting firearms in its corporate stores — and the Fort Worth store is one of them,” the gun control group wrote in a letter to Jack In The Box CEO Leonard Comma. “We call on you to enforce Jack in the Box’s no-firearms policy at all of its corporate locations and to encourage its franchisees to do the same. Without stronger state laws, the responsibility to protect employees and patrons falls to the business owner.

“As a business leader, you have the opportunity to take a stand for common sense and customer safety,” they added. “I urge you to implement policies to keep guns out of your restaurants.”

Jack in the Box employees hid in the restaurant’s freezer last week until police arrived, after a group of gun demonstrators walked into the store. In Texas, people are allowed to openly carry guns in public.

But Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America say businesses like Jack in the Box should be responsible for enforcing their own policies banning guns on company property to protect their employees and customers.

“Jack In The Box is disregarding the safety and peace of mind of patrons, employees and law enforcement by allowing groups and individuals to openly carry shotguns and rifles onto their properties,” Kellye Burke of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America’s Texas chapter said in a statement. “These businesses are subjecting hourly employees to danger and fear — and their customers, in search of burgers, to the potential for bullets.”

Jack in the Box has fast-food restaurants in 21 states around the country, including Texas.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is petitioning the restaurant to enforce stricter gun policies at all of these stores. The group has already convinced companies like Starbucks and Facebook to do so.

The petition can be found here.
