A crowded New Jersey Transit commuter train crashed into the Hoboken terminal during Thursday morning’s rush hour commute, killing at least one and injuring 100, according to multiple reports.
The Hoboken police chief told NBC New York that it’s possible there are “mass casualties.”
The cause of the crash is still unknown, but fire and safety officials are investigating the crash as a possible derailment. Federal Railroad Administration and National Transportation Safety Board investigators are also on the scene.
Preliminary reports suggest that the cause was operator error, and that the train appears to have went through a bumper stop at the end of the station’s track, according to NBC.
“It simply did not stop,” said WFAN anchor John Minko, who witnessed the crash, according to CBS New York. “It went right through the barriers and into the reception area.”
All NJ Transit and Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) train service has been suspended at the Hoboken terminal, which serves as the primary transit link between New York City and the New Jersey’s urban communities and suburbs.
Pictures posted on social media show heavy damage to the train station and train car. One picture showed a train car partially inside the building, bringing down the structure around it. Another shows piles of bricks, twisted metal and scattered debris around the crash scene.
