Uber being investigated over gender discrimination: report

Uber is being investigated by the federal government over allegations of gender pay discrimination, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s probe reportedly started in August. The agency has been speaking with current and former employees of the company.

{mosads}Investigators have been asking questions about hiring practices, pay disparity and other gender-related issues, according to the report.

The investigation is one of at least a half dozen Uber is facing.

The embattled company has been working to change its culture since CEO Dara Khosrowshahi took over from predecessor Travis Kalanick. The company’s public relations spiral began when whistleblower Susan Fowler brought to light alleged systemic mistreatment of women at the company last year.

“We have proactively made a lot of changes in the last 18 months, including implementing a new salary and equity structure based on the market, overhauling our performance review process,” publishing diversity reports and providing training to thousands of employees, an Uber spokesperson told Reuters.

Last week, Uber Chief People Officer Liane Hornsey left the company following an investigation over how she addressed allegations of internal racial discrimination.

Uber is just the latest tech company to face probes over discrimination of women. Palantir, Google and Oracle were all sued by the Department of Labor for this last year.
