Twitter CEO: Trump tweets ‘really important’ for transparency

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is defending President Trump’s use of the social media platform.

“I believe it’s really important to hear directly from our leadership. And I believe it’s really important to hold them accountable,” Dorsey said on a segment NBC News’ “Sunday Today with Willie Geist,” which will air this weekend.

{mosads}“And I believe it’s really important to have these conversations out in the open, rather than have them behind closed doors,” Dorsey continued.

“So if we’re all to suddenly take these platforms away, where does it go? What happens? It goes in the dark. And I just don’t think that’s good for anyone.”

Trump regularly takes to Twitter to present his views and hit back at critics.

Some of the president’s opponents though have pressed Twitter to cut off his account, arguing that he has violated company rules with some tweets that attacked individuals. Others have blasted him for conducting foreign policy on the platform and criticized him for targeting certain businesses.

The president’s tweeting has put the social media company in a difficult spot.

In December, when asked how he felt about Trump’s tweeting, Dorsey called it “complicated.”

“I feel very proud of the role of the service and what it stands for and everything that we’ve done, and that continues to accelerate every single day. Especially as it’s had such a spotlight on it through his usage and through the election,” Dorsey said in December.

Some speculate that Twitter’s renewed user growth may be benefiting from the president’s routine tweeting.
