Special counsel subpoenas Manafort spokesman, ex-attorney: report

Greg Nash

Special counsel Robert Mueller has reportedly subpoenaed Paul Manafort’s spokesman and his former attorney amid the Justice Department’s ongoing probe of Russian interference in last year’s election.

The subpoenas seek documents and testimony from Jason Maloni and Melissa Laurenza, who until recently served as the former Trump campaign chairman’s attorney, CNN reported Tuesday.

The subpoenas come after FBI agents raided Manafort’s Alexandria, Va., home in July, and could suggest an effort by Mueller and his team to keep up pressure on Manafort.

It was not immediately clear what documents Mueller requested, though CNN noted it is unusual for investigators to subpoena the attorneys of someone who is under investigation.

Mueller has not subpoenaed WilmerHale, the law firm of Manafort’s most recent attorneys and Mueller’s former employer.

The former Trump campaign chair has found himself under investigation by the Justice Department’s special counsel for possible financial crimes, though he has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

Manafort’s financial dealings have been under scrutiny for years, but the pace of probe has picked up significantly since Mueller took over the investigation in May.

On Friday, NBC News reported that the special counsel’s team has subpoenaed multiple public relations firms that worked with Manafort on an international campaign from 2012 to 2014.
