North Korea threatens Guam after Trump remarks

North Korea is raising the possibility of missile strikes on Guam just a few hours after President Trump vowed “fire, fury and frankly power” against Pyongyang should it threaten the United States.

A military spokesman said the country would strike the American territory if the United States provokes North Korea, Reuters reports, citing the country’s state media.

Trump earlier Tuesday warned Pyongyang not to make “any more threats” against the U.S.

{mosads}“He has been very threatening beyond a normal state, and as I said they will be met with fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before,” Trump said at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J.

North Korea has in the past threatened the United States in bombastic terms and once vowed to turn its neighbor, South Korea, into “a sea of fire.”

The latest threat also comes one day after North Korea’s foreign minister reportedly said the nation would use nuclear weapons on the U.S. if provoked.

Pyongyang “is ready to teach the U.S. a severe lesson with its nuclear strategic force,” said Ri Yong Ho, North Korea’s foreign minister.

Officials in the Trump administration have escalated their warnings to North Korea in recent weeks, with some suggesting their patience is wearing thin.

North Korea last month conducted two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in addition to multiple other missile tests this year.

The Washington Post on Tuesday reported that North Korea has now produced a miniaturized nuclear warhead that can fit onto a missile, bringing the country one step closer to becoming a nuclear power.
