Poll finds strong support for Roe v. Wade
Nearly two-thirds of Americans support Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized abortion, according to a new Gallup poll.
Sixty-four percent of Americans stand by Roe v. Wade while 28 percent would like to see it overturned, pollsters found.
The poll found a wide partisan split, with 81 percent of Democrats supporting the ruling, compared to 41 percent of Republicans. Thirteen percent of Democrats opposed Roe v. Wade, meanwhile, as did 51 percent of Republicans.
{mosads}Most Americans have consistently said they want the ruling to stand since Gallup began running this poll in 1989, but the new findings indicate a higher-than-average level of support.
The poll’s findings come as the Senate prepares to hold confirmation hearings for President Trump’s Supreme court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, who could tilt the court to the right for years to come.
Many Democrats and left-wings activists say Kavanaugh could be the deciding vote in overturning Roe v. Wade.
“Judge Kavanaugh’s own writings make clear that he would rule against reproductive rights and freedoms,” Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) said on Tuesday.
The Gallup poll also found that 49 percent of Americans believe a Supreme Court nominee’s views are reason enough to reject them, while 46 percent said it is unjustifiable to reject a nominee based on their views.
The poll results are based on telephone interviews conducted July 2-8 with a random sample of 1,291 adults. The margin of sampling error is 3 percentage points.
