Club for Growth launches ad slamming Trump on healthcare
The conservative group Club for Growth is launching a new ad hitting Donald Trump for his support for government-run, “single-payer” healthcare.
The roughly $200,000 ad buy will run in Utah ahead of the state’s caucuses on Tuesday, the group said.
{mosads}“Some people think government-run, taxpayer-paid healthcare is a disaster. And some don’t,” the ad states, before cutting to clips of Hillary Clinton and then Donald Trump.
The ad shows an interview with CBS in September when Trump said, “I’m going to take care of everybody.”
“Who pays for it?” interviewer Scott Pelley asks.
“The government’s gonna pay for it,” Trump responds.
Club for Growth says it will keep pointing to the issue.
“Donald Trump has repeatedly reaffirmed his support for a health care mandate and for government-run health care, and the Club for Growth will continue to urge people to tell Trump that he’s wrong on this issue,” said Club for Growth president David McIntosh.
Trump’s healthcare views have been a point of attack for other Republicans. Trump has defended his past support for single-payer healthcare, a concept generally reviled by Republicans.
“It works in Canada,” Trump said at the first Republican debate, in August. “It works incredibly well in Scotland. It could have worked in a different age.”
However, Trump did not go forward with proposing universal healthcare in the health plan he released earlier this month.
That plan instead calls for repealing ObamaCare and includes a range of standard Republican ideas, like allowing insurance to be sold across state lines.
An analysis from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget found that Trump’s plan would lead to 21 million people losing their health insurance.
