Liberal group planning more than 100 events the weekend before the tax deadline

The liberal Not One Penny coalition announced Thursday that it plans to hold more than 100 events across the country during the weekend before the tax-filing deadline to press for repeal of President Trump’s tax-cut law.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other politicians are expected to speak at the events, which will serve as the conclusion to Not One Penny’s tour across the country to make the case against the new law.

The events also come one year after Tax March events were held to call for Trump to release his tax returns.

No Democratic lawmakers voted for the tax law, arguing that it would greatly increase the debt and help wealthy individuals and corporations more than the middle class.

Since the law has been enacted, Pelosi and other Democratic lawmakers have said they want to undo parts of the law that are focused on the wealthy.

Pelosi said in a statement that the tax law’s concentration of benefits to the wealthy “is not only unfair, it’s un-American, and we must hold Republicans accountable for putting people’s health care, retirement savings, and livelihoods at risk all for tax cuts for their donors.”

Events will occur across the country on April 14 and 15, including in some areas that are being targeted by Democrats in the midterm elections. Not One Penny said it is also holding an event on Capitol Hill on the tax-filing due date of April 17.

“The last thing working-class Americans need is a tax code that further rigs the system in favor of corporations and the one percent, and we expect our 100 events across the country will show Republicans that we are holding them accountable, and still demand repeal of this awful bill,” said Nicole Gill, executive director of Tax March.

The tax filing deadline is April 17 this year, rather than the traditional April 15 date, because April 15 is a Sunday and April 16 is when Washington, D.C., is observing Emancipation Day.
