Poll: Public opposes Trump’s withdrawal from Paris deal by 2:1 margin

A majority of Americans oppose President Trump’s decision to pull the United States out of the Paris climate change agreement, according to a new survey.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll finds 59 percent of respondents oppose Trump’s move, compared to just 28 percent who support it.

A majority of Republicans, 67 percent, support Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the agreement, compared to 25 percent of Republicans who oppose it.

{mosads}Only 8 percent of Democrats support the move to withdraw from the agreement, while 82 percent of Democrats oppose the decision, according to the poll.

The poll also finds that 32 percent of respondents think the president’s decision to pull out of the deal will help the country’s economy. Another 42 percent of respondents, though, think the move will hurt the economy.

A slight majority, 51 percent, think Trump’s decision will do more to hurt international efforts to address climate change, compared to just 11 percent who think it will help. Fifty-five percent of Americans think the withdrawal will do more to hurt U.S. leadership in the world.

The poll was conducted from June 2 to 4 among 527 adults. The margin of error is 5 percent.

Trump last week rejected the Paris climate change agreement, calling it “unfair at the highest level to the United States.”

Trump cast his decision as one that puts the United States first, a central theme of his presidency.

“In order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens, the United States will withdraw from the Paris climate accord,” Trump said in a sunny outdoor ceremony at the White House Rose Garden.

“The bottom line is that the Paris accord is very unfair at the highest level to the United States,” Trump said.
