Energy-related carbon emissions rose 2.5 percent in 2013, according to the Energy Department’s stat shop.

New data released by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) on Tuesday found that carbon dioxide emissions from energy sources increased from 5,267 million metric tons to 5,396 million metric tons in 2013.

{mosads}The increase in 2013 was due in large part to the colder weather which led to more energy usage.

In only three years since 1990, other than 2013, have emissions increase, the stat shop said. Those include 1996, 2000, and 2010.

Emissions in 2013 were still 10 percent below 2005 levels, EIA said.
