Major New York progressive group endorses Cynthia Nixon

A major New York progressive political party, the New York Working Families Party, endorsed Cynthia Nixon for New York governor, HuffPost reported.

The former “Sex and the City” star received more than 90 percent of party members’ votes at their annual committee meeting.

Nixon announced her candidacy for governor of New York in March. She is challenging current New York governor Andrew Cuomo — who is running for a third term — for the Democratic party nomination. {mosads}

Although Nixon’s campaign has been seen as a long shot, obtaining one of the most sought-after endorsements might make her a more serious challenger to the two-time governor.

poll from mid-March shows Cuomo leading Nixon by 47 points in the primary in the deep-blue state.

Nixon is mounting a progressive challenge against Cuomo. She has been openly critical of Cuomo, who she has characterized as a “centrist and Albany insider.”

The Working Families Party was formed in 1998 by labor unions and community groups and advocates for progressive issues. Though technically a separate party, it tends to endorse and support progressive candidates from the major parties.
