Kavanaugh to face marathon question sessions next week on Capitol Hill

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh will undergo three days of confirmation hearings starting on Tuesday, including two marathon days of grilling on Wednesday and Thursday when he appears before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Hearings are scheduled to begin at 9:30 each morning, with Friday set aside for witness testimony that Kavanaugh is not expected to attend.

{mosads}Kavanaugh will be introduced on Sept. 4 by Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), who served with him in the George W. Bush administration.

Further introductory remarks will be made by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who also served with Kavanaugh in the Bush administration, and Lisa Blatt, a former clerk to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Tuesday will be a shorter day, devoted primarily to opening remarks. Each of the 21 senators on the committee will be allotted 10 minutes to make statements. The day’s proceedings are expected to wrap up at 2:15 p.m.

Wednesday will be the longest day. Senators will each have 30 minutes to ask questions, and the first round of grilling is expected to last until 9:30 p.m.

The second round of questioning will take place on Thursday, when senators will each be allotted 20 minutes. That day’s Q&A is expected to finish at 6 p.m.

If senators want a third round, they will likely get it, but the time given to each senator will probably be shorter.

Friday will be devoted to testimony from outside witnesses. Two American Bar Association witnesses are expected to testify — one invited by Republicans and one invited by Democrats.

Twenty-eight witnesses are scheduled for Friday.
