NFL says no change yet on national anthem policy

The NFL said Wednesday that it has not changed its policy about the national anthem, but will continue discussions about the subject in next week’s League meetings.

“Commissioner Roger Goodell reached out to NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith today and both he and player leadership will attend the League meetings next week. There has been no change in the current policy regarding the anthem,” reads a joint statement from the NFL, NFLPA.

{mosads}“The agenda will be a continuation of how to make progress on the important social issues that players have vocalized. Everyone who is part of our NFL community has a tremendous respect for our country, our flag, our anthem and our military, and we are coming together to deal with these issues in a civil constructive way.”

The latest statement comes after weeks of controversy ignited by President Trump about players who choose to kneel, rather than stand, during “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The White House said Tuesday that it would support a rule from the NFL that would require players to stand during the national anthem.

Trump on Wednesday in a tweet said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is “demanding” players stand during the anthem, but the NFL said the comment was “not accurate.”

The president has said players who kneel during the anthem are disrespecting the United States and its flag.
