Pelosi calls for Hunter to resign

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Tuesday called for the resignation of Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) after he and his wife were indicted on charges of misusing at least $250,000 in campaign funds.

Pelosi said in a statement that the charges against Hunter are “evidence of the rampant culture of corruption among Republicans in Washington today.”

“Once again, one of President Trump’s earliest supporters in Congress has broken the public trust and abused his position to enrich himself and his family,” she said. “Speaker Ryan must immediately call on Congressman Hunter to resign, and affirm that no one is above the law.”

The Hill has reached out to Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) office for comment.

Hunter is accused of using the campaign funds to purchase trips to Italy and Hawaii and pay for his family’s dental work, his children’s tuition and international travel for nearly a dozen relatives, according to the Department of Justice.

Michael Harrison, a spokesperson for Hunter, told The Hill in an email earlier Tuesday that Hunter believes the indictment is “purely politically motivated.”

Hunter was the second member of Congress to endorse President Trump in 2016. The first was Rep. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.), who earlier this month was arrested and charged with federal securities fraud.
