First lady Melania Trump’s parents were reportedly sworn in Thursday as United States citizens.

The Associated Press reported that Viktor and Amalija Knavs took a citizenship oath in New York, according to their lawyer. The couple is from Slovenia, where Trump was born and raised.

The Knavs had previously lived in the country as permanent U.S. citizens.

{mosads}There has been speculation that the couple received legal status in the country based on family reunification, known as “chain migration,” which President Trump has repeatedly called a problematic policy that should be ended.

Immigration experts told The Washington Post in February that it was likely the first lady sponsored her parents for green cards.

Trump has said ending chain migration is one of the four pillars that needs to be included in immigration reform.

“Under the current broken system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives,” he said in his State of the Union speech. “Under our plan, we focus on the immediate family by limiting sponsorships to spouses and minor children. This vital reform is necessary, not just for our economy, but for our security and our future.”
