Trump inaccurately claims he won the female vote in 2016 election

President Trump on Thursday falsely claimed that more women voted for him than for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

While touting the economic growth that has taken place during his administration, the president said to steelworkers in Granite City, Ill., that he “got more than she did” referring to the number of votes he received from women.

“But I did win that women’s vote, didn’t I?” Trump said. “Remember, they said, ‘Why would women vote for Trump?’ Well, I don’t know but I got more than she did. That’s pretty good.”

In fact, Trump received 41 percent of the female vote in the 2016 election. He did receive a majority of the vote, 52 percent, among white women. His numbers were much lower among women of color.

The president also highlighted low unemployment numbers among African Americans, Hispanics and Asians, noting that they have all hit record lows. He then said that unemployment among women has not reached a record level — noting it has only hit a 65-year low.

“I’m sorry, women, to disappoint you. This is tough,” Trump joked.

Trump has erroneously claimed he won 52 percent of the women’s vote before. He made the claim at an event in Montana in March.

Polling has typically shown Trump performs better among men.

A Washington Post-Schar School Poll released earlier this month found that 32 percent of women approve of Trump’s job performance, while 65 percent said they disapprove. In that same poll, 54 percent of men said they approved while 45 percent disapproved.

The president has faced numerous accusations of sexual misconduct from women dating back to his time on the campaign trail. Multiple women alleged that Trump groped them, kissed them or made inappropriate comments toward them dating back decades.

Trump also faced backlash leading up to the 2016 election date after an “Access Hollywood” tape was released in which he described groping women’s genitals without consent.
