Kelly has frequently threatened to quit if Trump didn’t listen to him: report
Chief of staff John Kelly used to often threaten to quit to try and get President Trump to listen to him, The New York Times reported Friday.
One Trump adviser told the Times that Kelly’s threats to leave were one of a few pieces of leverage available to him.
And other advisers told the paper that Kelly will walk out of meetings that go in a direction he doesn’t agree with and will yell at advisers who speak with Trump without Kelly’s authorization.
Kelly has repeatedly denied that he has threatened to quit.
{mosads}“I am in this for the long haul. It is the most important thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Kelly said on Fox News on Wednesday.
“Because if the administration fails, if the president of the United States is uninformed one time and makes the wrong decision, that’s on me,” he added.
Kelly has been known to run a tight ship in the White House, attempting to bring order to an administration described as chaotic and facing high levels of turnover.
Some aides told the Times that they felt more dread than motivation while starting Trump’s second year in office.
