Trump shifts criticism in latest Sessions attack

President Trump on Wednesday opened a new line of attack against Jeff Sessions, questioning why his embattled attorney general didn’t fire the acting FBI director over his ties to the Clintons.

“Why didn’t A.G. Sessions replace Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, a Comey friend who was in charge of Clinton investigation but got big dollars ($700,000) for his wife’s political run from Hillary Clinton and her representatives. Drain the Swamp!” Trump tweeted.

McCabe has been a Trump target since the campaign, when the then-GOP nominee questioned the FBI investigation over Hillary Clinton’s email server by citing ties between McCabe’s wife and the Clintons.

{mosads}Dr. Jill McCabe was recruited to run for a Virginia state Senate seat as a Democrat by Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D), a longtime Clinton confidant and fundraiser.

McAuliffe’s PAC gave McCabe’s campaign $450,000, and the Virginia Democratic Party kicked in another $200,000.

At the time, Andrew McCabe was assistant director of the FBI field office in Washington and was mostly focused on terrorism-related cases.

The president, and not the attorney general, is responsible for nominating an FBI director. Trump took roughly a month to select Chris Wray to replace James Comey, who was fired in May.
