Carney defends diversity of Obama’s Cabinet
Earlier this month, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) complained that Obama had thus far failed to name any new black Cabinet nominees.
{mosads}”Four months into his second term, we look to the president’s Cabinet appointments only to find that he has once again overlooked his most loyal constituency,” Thompson said in the Congressional Black Caucus’s weekly radio address.
Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio), chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, also sent the president a letter expressing disappointment in the his appointments.
Comedian Conan O’Brien even knocked Obama over the composition of his Cabinet at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.
“Mr. President, your hair is so white it could be a member of your Cabinet,” O’Brien quipped.
On Monday, Carney said Obama was “pleased with the individuals who have agreed to accept his nominations for positions in the Cabinet.”
“And, obviously, there are other nominations still to come,” he continued. “I think that what you will see is a Cabinet that reflects the diversity of the country and reflects the quality of people who are willing to serve their country in these important positions.”
