DeVos to meet with students, teachers at site of Fla. school shooting

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is visiting the high school in Parkland, Fla., where 17 people were killed in February.

DeVos will travel to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Wednesday to “connect with students and teachers in the wake of the tragic shooting,” according to a statement shared by a Los Angeles Times reporter on Tuesday.

Her visit will be closed to the press.

The attack has reignited a national conversation about gun violence, spearheaded by many of the survivors of the shooting.

Stoneman Douglas students have been outspoken about their desire for gun reform and have specifically targeted the National Rifle Association and Republican politicians backed by the gun group.

The “March for Our Lives” rally against gun violence is scheduled for March 24 and will be held in Washington, D.C., and a number of other cities.

DeVos had signaled she’s open to allowing guns in schools but said it’s up to the states and local communities to decide.

After the Florida shooting, President Trump pushed for arming teachers as a way to prevent future shootings.
