Hillary Clinton drops Blackberry photo from Twitter profile

Hillary Clinton on Sunday dropped from her Twitter profile an iconic photo of herself checking her Blackberry, replacing it with a photo recognizing the push for gender equality.

On Sunday, International Women’s Day, Clinton tweeted:

See my new profile pic to raise awareness on how far we’ve come in reaching equal rights for women & girls worldwide. http://t.co/MzqVBq6FTL

The tweet came shortly after Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), the chairman of the House select committee investigating Benghazi, mentioned in a televised interview the photo that Clinton previously had for her avatar:

“If you think to that iconic picture of her on a C-17 flying to Libya – she has sunglasses on and she has her handheld device in her hand – we have no emails from that day. In fact, we have no emails from that trip,” Gowdy said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

The photo, taken on an October 2011 flight to Tripoli, Libya, was part of the meme “Texts from Hillary,” which played out potential text conversations between the former secretary of State and figures such as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and President Obama.

Clinton changed her profile to promote a Clinton Foundation and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation initiative for gender equality, encouraging others to do the same on the linked website.

She kept the Blackberry photo as her Twitter banner image.

Other Clinton-linked Twitter profiles, including for daughter Chelsea Clinton, the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative have taken on the new avatar.

Ready for Hillary, the super-PAC intended to draw Clinton to launch a Democratic presidential bid in 2016, also adopted the photo.

On Saturday evening, Clinton gave a preview of data on the progress of girls and women while speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative University meeting in Florida, though she steered clear of recent scrutiny over the Clinton Foundation’s foreign donors and her use of private email.
