Liberals push for Elizabeth Warren recess appointment

{mosads}”Within one day of launching the open letter at WeSupportWarren.com, over 100,000 people across the nation have signed,” said Stephanie Taylor, PCCC’s co-founder. “We’re showing [President Obama] that there’s broad public support for Elizabeth Warren.”

The surge in support for Warren comes in response to GOP efforts to curb the CFPB, which was created by the Dodd-Frank financial reform law and is scheduled to begin work in July.

Earlier this month, 44 Republican senators said they would block any nominee to be CFPB director unless changes were made to the bureau; House Republicans are pushing bills in pursuit of a similar goal.

That blockade launched a push by Warren backers — including some House Democrats — to have the president name her to the position, using a recess appointment to skirt Senate the confirmation process. They argue the broad refusal to consider nominees leaves the president no choice.

The spotlight on Warren got significantly brighter Tuesday after she participated in a testy hearing in front of the House Oversight Committee. After facing aggressive questions from several Republican members, the event was capped off by a lengthy argument between Warren and Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), the chairman of the subcommittee hosting the hearing.

The two disagreed over how long Warren had agreed to testify, as she attempted to leave at 2:15. She maintained she had been told she could go at that time, while McHenry said no such promise was made. The two went back and forth, with McHenry ultimately accusing her of lying about the arrangement.
