Helen Mirren to testify about Nazi-stolen art

Actress Helen Mirren is heading to Capitol Hill to advocate for the return of stolen art.

In the movie “Woman in Gold,” the award-winning actress plays a Jewish woman who fights for the return of her family’s long-lost art collection that was stolen by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

{mosads}But Mirren is also fighting for the return of stolen art off the screen. On Tuesday, she will testify before the Senate about the issue, which has drawn bipartisan support.

The Senate hearing will be co-chaired by two Texas Republicans — John Cornyn and Ted Cruz — who are pushing the Holocaust Expropriated Art Recovery Act along with Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.).

The purpose of the legislation is to “facilitate the return of artwork stolen by Nazis during the Holocaust to their rightful owners or heirs,” the lawmakers say.

Also testifying at the hearing will be former Ambassador Ronald Lauder, who serves as chairman of the World Jewish Restitution Organization, and Agnes Peresztegi, president of the Commission for Art Recovery.
