Louise Linton, wife of Treasury secretary, apologizes for Instagram comments

Actress Louise Linton, who recently married Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, apologized Tuesday for an Instagram post and a subsequent comment she made Monday night after the post became the subject of backlash.

The Scottish actress had posted a photo on Instagram showing her leaving a government plane while on a trip to Kentucky with Mnuchin and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). In the post, she included hashtags for the expensive brands she was wearing, such as #rolandmouret, #hermesscarf, #tomford and #valentino.

An Instagram user, Jenni Miller, accused her of being “deplorable” and mocked her, saying that she is “glad we could pay for your little getaway.” Linton responded, calling the commenter “out of touch” and saying she and her husband “sacrifice” more to the U.S. government.

{mosads}The post quickly went viral and became the subject of backlash. Linton apologized Tuesday afternoon in a tweet.

“I apologize for my post on social media yesterday as well as my response,” Linton wrote in a statement first obtained by CNN’s Jeremy Diamond.

Miller told The New York Times in an interview that she thought Linton’s comments were “wholly inappropriate.”

“It seems like she’s been in public life for a long time,” she said. “It just seemed wholly inappropriate.

“I think my post was just five or six words, and she had to go on basically a rant about it to make herself look more important and look smarter, better, richer — all those things,” Miller said.
