Express Scripts hires former top Judiciary staffer to defend drug benefits merger

At least eight lawmakers of both parties have raised concerns with the merger, and two weeks ago, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the issue during which the two companies sought to rebut antitrust concerns raised by lawmakers and consumer advocates.

Express Scripts spent $450,000 lobbying in the second quarter of 2011, before the merger was on the horizon. The company’s offer to buy MedCo for $29 billion was made public on July 21.
