Reid rips Trump’s ‘un-American’ response to Orlando shooting

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) says Donald Trump’s response to the mass shooting in Orlando underscores why he shouldn’t be president.

“Donald Trump proved that he’s a terrible leader. … Trump proved that he’s not the person to lead our nation through difficult times, or any times,” Reid said from the Senate floor Tuesday.

A gunman killed 49 people and injured 53 in a gay nightclub in Orlando early Sunday morning, making it the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

In the wake of the shooting, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed credit for the attack, and Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, reiterated his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the country.

Reid said Trump’s Monday speech was “one of the most un-American speeches ever” and proved that Trump “isn’t the person we want to have his finger on the nuclear button.”

“He was hateful. He was vicious. He was Donald Trump,” Reid said.

“It’s incomprehensible that any presidential nominee would foster and promote systemic bigotry, as Trump often does.”

Reid has repeatedly used the Senate floor to knock the brash businessman and criticize congressional Republicans for supporting him. He added Tuesday that unless Republicans publicly call out their likely nominee, “they’re all guilty of normalizing hatred.”

“They must do what they haven’t had the courage to do: Stand up to Trump and say no more,” Reid said.
