Three years later, House still not honoring sports champions

The Giants had a shot at a House resolution when they won the World Series in 2010. Six weeks after beating the Texas Rangers, then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi introduced a resolution congratulating her team, but the resolution was never adopted — Democrats had just lost the House, and she was transitioning to becoming the chamber’s minority leader.

{mosads}The last World Series winner to be recognized in a resolution passed by the House was the New York Yankees. The resolution from Rep. José Serrano (D-N.Y.) was easily approved, although notably, 17 members voted against it and 11 voted “present” — many of whom were from Massachusetts.

The same has held true for other major sports. The last NFL team to be recognized in a House resolution was the New Orleans Saints. But the Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants went unrecognized, even though House members offered resolutions.

This year’s NBA champs, the Miami Heat, got lucky in game six when Ray Allen hit a miracle shot in game six that let the Heat survive and go on to win game seven. But while several Florida members are looking to rub it in, House GOP leaders have not made any move to pass it.

The last NBA team to be honored by a House resolution was the now-struggling Los Angeles Lakers, who won before House Republicans took over.
