House conducts moment of silence for Chattanooga victims

The House paused its first votes of the week on Tuesday evening to hold a moment of silence for the victims of the shootings in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The moment of silence came hours after Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) ordered flags to fly at half-staff around the Capitol complex. President Obama later called for the same at the White House.

Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-Tenn.), surrounded by members of the Tennessee congressional delegation gathered in the center of the House floor, read aloud the names of the five members of the military who died in the attack.

{mosads}The alleged shooter, who died in a gunfight with law enforcement, launched gunshots at a military recruitment center in a strip mall and a Navy operations support center.

Four Marines and a sailor were victims: Sgt. Carson Holmquist, Petty Officer Randall Smith, Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, Lance Cpl. Squire K. Wells and Staff Sgt. David Wyatt.

“There was devastation. There was death. There was horror. And I am so deeply saddened,” Fleischmann said. “This is a day I never want to see again.”
