Most in new poll say Trump doesn’t hire ‘best people’

A majority of Americans don’t think President Trump hires “the best people” to work in his administration, according to a new poll.

The Monmouth University poll showed 58 percent of participants said Trump doesn’t hire “the best people” — something he frequently claimed he would do during his presidential campaign. Only 30 percent of people polled said they believe Trump hires the best people, with 7 percent saying the quality of those hired by the White House has been “mixed.”

The poll also found that 42 percent of respondents are “not at all” confident in Trump’s advisers and staff, while 13 percent said they are “not too confident.” 

“Some observers who were lukewarm about the prospect of a Trump presidency believed that a decent set of advisers would keep him on an even keel,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, in a statement. “However, fully four in ten Americans have no confidence whatsoever in the people currently advising the President of the United States. That cannot be good.”

Trump’s overall job approval currently stands at 43 percent of respondents approving and 50 percent disapproving, the poll also found, in line with polls since January.

The Trump White House has set records for staff turnover. In July, the AP reported a turnover rate of 37 percent in the White House for the 12-month period ending June 30. The AP analysis also found that 61 percent of Trump’s senior aides had left their positions.

The poll surveyed 805 adults over telephone from August 15 to August 19. The margin of error of is 3.5 percentage points.
