Parkland student continues speech after throwing up

Parkland, Fla., shooting survivor Sam Fuentes spoke at the Washington, D.C., “March For Our Lives” protest on Saturday, where she became ill onstage before finishing her speech in front of thousands of assembled students and other protesters.

Fuentes was one of more than a dozen students injured last month when a gunman attacked Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killing 17.

“The truth is, I am not here for me. I am here for you. So you don’t have to fear getting shot in your own classroom,” Fuentes said before the episode.

The high school student became ill and threw up onstage while the cameras were still rolling, before being comforted by another organizer and helped back to the podium where she resumed speaking for several minutes.

“I just threw up on international television!” Fuentes said after returning to the podium. “And it feels great!”

“We’re not asking for a ban, we’re asking for compromise,” she continued, calling for tougher gun restrictions alongside about 200 of her fellow Parkland students.

“Our mission is simple and our ambitions are unbeatable. Let’s keep the guns out of the hands of the wrong people and keep them in the hands of the safe and reasonable,” she said.

Fuentes previously made headlines last month when she told reporters she was disappointed in President Trump after receiving a phone call from him following the shooting.

“He said he heard I was a big fan of his, and then he said, ‘I’m a big fan of yours, too,’ ” Fuentes said in February.

“I’m pretty sure he made that up,” she continued. “Talking to the president, I’ve never been so unimpressed by a person in all my life. He didn’t make me feel better in the slightest.”
