Package bound for Austin explodes at FedEx facility near San Antonio

Federal officials are investigating after a package bound for Austin, Texas, exploded at a FedEx distribution facility near San Antonio early Tuesday, officials said.

The package was said to contain shrapnel and nails, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.

One person was hurt in the explosion, sustaining a “percussive type injury” that was not life threatening.

Shortly after 12 midnight, a package destined for Austin, Tx detonated at the FedEx distribution facility located at 9935 Doerr Lane. The package was said to have contained nails and shrapnel.

Of the 75 people working at the facility, only one complained of injury described as a non life threatening percussion type injury.
All inbound and outbound packages are in limbo, and transport vehicles are in gridlock. At this hour, ATF and FBI assets are beginning to arrive.

CBS News, citing an FBI official, said “it’s more than possible” that the explosion at the distribution center in Schertz, Texas, is related to other recent explosions in the Austin area.

The Tuesday explosion marked the fourth this month. So far, two people have been killed in the blasts, and several others have been injured.

A blast on Sunday night left two men injured after they apparently triggered a tripwire that set off an explosive device attached to a for-sale sign in a residential area.

Authorities have not yet identified any one person or organization believed to be behind the explosions.
