John Brennan: Lawmakers who protect Trump will face reckoning

Former CIA Director John Brennan is warning that lawmakers who try to protect President Trump will face a “reckoning.”

“Leadership of House Intel Committee has traded last vestige of integrity for politics,” Brennan tweeted.

“With other investigative shoes yet to drop, legislators who try to protect @realDonaldTrump will face November reckoning. Hopefully, bipartisan effort in Senate Intel Committee will endure…”

{mosads}The comments come after Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas) said Monday the House Intelligence Committee is shutting down its contentious investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The committee will not interview any more witnesses and Republicans are in the process of preparing their final report, Conaway told reporters. A draft of that roughly 150-page report will be delivered to committee Democrats for review on Tuesday. 

The draft document says there is no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians.

The document will also contradict an official U.S. intelligence community assessment that Russian President Vladimir Putin showed a “preference” for Trump during the race.

The Senate Intelligence Committee’s probe is still ongoing and its first product, a report on election security, is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

Brennan has in the past been critical of Trump. Earlier this month, he predicted “rough waters ahead,” particularly on international issues, saying Trump is “unstable, inept, inexperienced, and also unethical.”
