Cruz: Honor ‘brave souls’ who fought Castro’s dictatorship

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Saturday urged Americans to honor the Cubans who resisted and fought the late Fidel Castro’s communist regime over the last several decades.

“Fidel Castro’s death cannot bring back his thousands of victims, nor can it bring comfort to their families,” Cruz, who is of Cuban descent, wrote in a Facebook post.

{mosads}”Today we remember them and honor the brave souls who fought the lonely fight against the brutal Communist dictatorship he imposed on Cuba,” he added.

Cruz, whose father and extended family opposed Castro in Cuba, has been highly critical of the dictator and U.S. efforts to restore relations with the country. Cruz called President Obama’s decision to reestablish relations with Cuba “yet another tragic mistake” that will not lead to internal reforms within the communist country.

On Saturday, Cuban state television announced that the country’s leader has died at 90.

Castro’s brother Raul Castro made a brief TV statement announcing Castro’s death.

“It is with great pain I come to inform our country, friends of our America, and the world that today, Nov. 25, 2016 at 10:29 p.m., the commander in chief of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, died,” he said.

Castro’s funeral will be held on Dec. 4 in Santiago, Cuba.
