News of the fundraiser also drew many on Twitter to suggest Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley should attend. One of the show’s central characters — Baltimore Mayor Tommy Carcetti — is said to be based on O’Malley, who is rumored to be considering his own bid for the White House in 2016.

O’Malley has disavowed, however, any connection to Carcetti, saying during his tenure as mayor the city improved from the conditions depicted in the show.

“I would take issue with whether or not I’m the inspiration for The Wire,” O’Malley said. “I’m the antidote to The Wire.”
