Poll: Two-thirds of Americans give Trump credit for economy

Most Americans believe President Trump is at least somewhat responsible for the good state of the economy, a CBS News poll revealed Sunday.

According to the poll, 35 percent of Americans believe Trump’s policies are “a great deal” responsible for the economy’s performance. Another 33 percent said the president is “somewhat” responsible.

Overall, around two in three Americans believe the economy is in at least somewhat good shape, the poll found. In addition, 42 percent of respondents said they feel optimistic about the economy for the next couple of years.

Twenty-one percent of respondents said Trump’s policies are not very responsible for the economy doing well currently, while 11 percent said they believe the current administration is not at all responsible for the country’s economic outlook.

Most Americans — 88 percent — think Trump, to some extent, is looking out for the interests of big business like his own family business or other wealthy individuals.

Trump and his allies have frequently touted the performance of the economy during his administration. They point to the stock market reaching new highs during his presidency, and unemployment numbers hitting their lowest marks in years.

The poll, conducted May 16-18, surveyed 2,023 adults in the U.S. It has a margin of error of 2.6 percentage points.
